- Intended as a replacement for the Douglas DC-3, and a direct competitor to the Fokker Friendship for civil and military use, the HS-748 was designed by A V Roe and Company (later part of the Hawker Siddeley Group) as a 36-seat commercial airliner.
The Hawker Siddeley HS 748is a medium-sized turbopropairlineroriginally designed by the British firm Avroin the late 1950s as a replacement for the aging DC-3sthen in widespread service as feederliners. Avro concentrated on performance, notably for STOLoperations, and found a dedicated market. 380 aircraft were built by Hawker Siddeley. Hawker Siddeley Andover C.1. The 748-2B incorporated a 2000 lb increase in payload, increased span, more powerful engines, and a number of cockpit refinements, flew in June 1979. A production version of the twin-turboprop transport is the Super 748. In its Military Transport form the 748 has a large rear freight door, strengthened floor,.
Hawker Siddeley, where the 748 was known as the HS-748, was merged into British Aerospace and from January 1 1978 the Hawker Siddeley name disappeared. Production of the aircraft type, now the BAe-748, ended in 1988 with the last flying that December (with delivery the following month).

The Andover C.1 was developed from the HS 748 airliner. Obvious difference is an upswept rear fuselage with rear loading ramp. The Andover CC.2 is not a variant of the cargo/transport Andover but a VIP transport version of the commercial HS 748.
